Privacy notice
Last updated November 5, 2026. The short version: your audio and recordings stay in your browser, and we keep only your email so we can count users. We do not send email to it.
What we store
- Your email address, when you sign up to unlock the full suite, with the date, the approximate country your connection comes from, and where you signed up (the app).
- Recording submissions, only if you use the Upload page: the name, optional email, track title, note and link you enter, the date, and the approximate country your connection comes from. To stop spam we also keep a scrambled (hashed) form of your connection address, not the address itself. If you upload a file instead of a link (from the Upload page or the Share button in the app), we also keep that audio or video file in private storage. Nobody can listen to it except us, and only to review it.
- An anonymous play count on featured recordings. When someone listens to a featured recording on the Community page, a counter for that recording goes up. To stop one person from running the number up, we briefly keep a scrambled (hashed) form of the connection address together with the recording and the date, and delete it after a couple of days. It is never combined with your email or anything else, and only we can see the counts.
- An anonymous open count. Each time the app is opened, a counter goes up by one. It contains no email, no cookie and no identifier, so it cannot be tied to you.
- On your own device only: your settings, drum patterns, setlists, autosaved projects, and a note that you have signed up. These never leave your browser.
What we do not store
Your microphone input, recordings, songs you load, and projects are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to us, unless you choose to share a recording with the Upload page or the Share button in the app.
Why we keep your email
To count how many people use Fretnook so we can size our servers and plan. We do not send email to it, and we do not sell it or share it for other companies' marketing. If we ever offer a news or blog email, it will be a separate sign-up that you choose.
Who handles the data
The site and sign-up list run on Cloudflare (hosting, Workers and a D1 database). If we show ads from an ad network such as Google AdSense, that network may use cookies or similar identifiers to show and measure ads; the app first asks whether you accept personalized ads or only non-personalized ones, and you can change your mind by clearing this site's data in your browser. Recording submissions are stored in the same Cloudflare database, and a short alert about each one is emailed to us through Cloudflare.
Your choices
- Delete your email any time: open the app, press Subscribed at the top, then Delete my email & unsubscribe. Or email [email protected] and we will remove it.
- Sign out of a device from the same place; this keeps your email on our list but locks the full suite on that device.
- We do not email the sign-up list. If that ever changes, it will be a separate opt-in.
How long we keep it
Your email is kept until you delete it or ask us to. Recording submissions, including any uploaded files, are kept until we review them (uploaded files that are not featured are deleted automatically after 30 days); ones we don't feature are deleted, and you can ask us to remove yours at any time. If you use Send to other device, the project is held privately for 24 hours so your other device can fetch it with a code, then deleted. If you bring in a file from a Google Drive link, it passes through our server to reach your browser and is not stored. Anonymous daily counts are kept as totals.
Children
Fretnook is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their emails.
