An AI backing band that plays along with your song

Record your guitar, press Listen & Suggest, and Fretnook works out the tempo, key and chords of your take. Then it builds a band to match: drums, bass, keys and a horn section, in the style you choose. Preview it with your track and bounce each part to its own track.

Free with a quick email sign-up. Your recording is analyzed in your browser and never uploaded.
Quick start

From a guitar take to a full band in four steps

  1. Record a take

Record your guitar on the Recorder tab, with a click or without one. A few bars of steady strumming gives the best result.

  2. Listen & Suggest

Open the Band tab. Fretnook listens to the track and fills in its tempo, key and a chord chart. Check the chords and fix any that sound wrong, since it is a good first guess and not a certainty.

  3. Pick a style and the parts

Choose Rock, Pop, Blues Shuffle, Slow Blues, Funk, Country, Reggae or Ballad. Switch Drums, Bass, Keys and Horns on or off, and use the Energy and Busy-ness sliders to play it softer, harder, sparser or fuller.

  4. Preview and bounce

Preview plays the band with your track, and New Variation makes a different take. When you like it, Bounce to Tracks puts each part on its own track, lined up with your recording and ready for the mixer.

What you get

A band that follows your chords

Listens to your playing

Finds the tempo, the key and the chord changes in your recording, and spots when a progression repeats.

Eight styles

Rock, Pop, Blues Shuffle, Slow Blues, Funk, Country, Reggae and Ballad, each with its own groove, bass line and fills.

Drums, bass, keys and horns

Drums are synthesized live. Bass, piano, electric piano, brass section, trumpet, trombone and saxes are real instrument samples.

No recording needed

Type your own chords, such as Am | F | C | G, or choose a preset like the 12-bar blues in any key.

Each part on its own track

Bounce drums, bass, keys and horns to separate tracks so you can mix, pan and effect each one.

Works offline

The instrument sounds download the first time you use them, then the installed app works without a connection.

Practise like you have a rhythm section

Playing alone makes it hard to judge your timing and your feel. A bass line and a drum groove that follow your chords tell you straight away whether you are rushing, and they make a simple progression sound like a song.

Wear headphones when you play along and record, so the microphone hears your guitar and not the band coming out of the speakers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI backing band free?
Yes. It unlocks, along with the rest of the DAW, with a free email sign-up. There is no payment.
How does it know what to play?
It analyzes the recording in your browser to find the beat, the key and the chords, then builds drum, bass, keys and horn parts that follow that chord chart. It is signal analysis, so it works best on clear strumming, and you can edit the chords before you preview.
Do I need to record first?
No. Choose a chord preset and a key, or type your own chords, and the band plays them.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. The analysis and the band are all built in your browser, and the recording stays on your device.
Where do the instrument sounds come from?
The piano, bass and horn sounds come from the FluidR3 GM soundfont (credit: Frank Wen, Creative Commons Attribution). They download once and are then stored for offline use.
